10 New Year’s Resolutions

RESOLUTION #1: FIGHT THE POWER!
Jan 13: UPSTREAM BATTLE (2008) Get a dose of inspiration for fighting corporate greed and environmental destruction in 2009. In UPSTREAM BATTLE, a Native American rock n’ roller-turned-activist battles to save the Klamath River’s salmon population going up against billionaire Warren Buffet.  Q&A with director Ben Kempas.

RESOLUTION #2: HAVE SEX AND MAKE IT SAFE!
Jan 20: THE EDUCATION OF SHELBY KNOX (2005)  A high school girl in Texas shocks her conservative community by campaigning for better sex education in a culture that teaches abstinence-only. Audience Award winner at SXSW. Q&A will include Shelby Knox, who’s graduated from college and continues to campaign for feminist causes. Q&A with directors Rose Rosenblatt & Marion Lipschutz + Shelby Knox.

RESOLUTION #3: TAKE A ROAD TRIP!
Jan 27: PARALLEL LINES (2003) - Nina Davenport (the director of “Operation Filmmaker” and “Always a Bridesmaid”) travels across America to uncover surprising and poignant reflections in the months after Sept 11, 2001.

RESOLUTION #4: CONFRONT YOUR DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY!
Feb 3: MUST READ AFTER MY DEATH (2008) - An exploration of an unconventional family told through an enormous archive of home movies and recordings.  Co-presented by Hamptons International Film Festival. Q&A with director Morgan Dews.

RESOLUTION #5: CONFRONT YOUR DYSFUNCTIONAL COUNTRY!
Feb 10: AXE IN THE ATTIC (2007) - Filmmakers Lucia Small and Ed Pincus chronicle the lives of New Orleans residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina. An official selection of New York Film Festival. Q&A with directors Ed Pincus & Lucia Small.

RESOLUTION #6: RESPECT AN INDUSTRY PIONEER!
Feb 17: WILLIAM GREAVES TRIBUTE - A night of film clips and speakers honors the ground-breaking director of works such as “Black Journal” and “Symbiopsychotaxiplasm.” Q&A with Greaves and special guests.
RESOLUTION #7: RESPECT YOUR GRANDPARENTS!
Feb 24: INTIMATE STRANGER (1991) - Alan Berliner (the director of “Wide Awake” and “The Sweetest Sound”) makes inventive use of archival footage to explore the unusual career of his Jewish grandfather in Egypt and Japan. Q&A with director Alan Berliner.

RESOLUTION #8: MENTOR A YOUTH!
Mar 3: GIRLS LIKE US (1997) - The Grand Jury Prize winner at the Sundance Film Festival follows four girls from inner city Philadelphia as they cope with profound life changes through four years of high school. Q&A with directors Jane C. Wagner & Tina DeFeliciantonio.

RESOLUTION #9: CHALLENGE YOUR INTELLECT!
Mar 10: ARGUING THE WORLD (1998) - The generation of New York intellectuals who came of age in the 1930s are examined as their politics split between left and right over the course of the 20th century. Q&A with director Joseph Dorman.

RESOLUTION #10: HAVE MORE SEX AND MAKE IT MEMORABLE!
Closing Night Mar 17: AMERICAN SWING (2008) - This history of the New York sex club Plato’s Retreat traces its rise and fall through hilarious and raunchy interviews with Melvin Van Peebles, Buck Henry, Ed Koch and other eyewitnesses. An official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival. Q&A with directors Mathew Kaufman & Jon Hart.
