A PROMISE TO THE DEAD: THE EXILE JOURNEY OF ARIEL DORFMAN
Q&A with Ariel Dorfman and director Peter Raymont (co-presented by the Human Rights Watch Film Festival)
Ariel Dorfman, the renowned author of “Death and the Maiden” and other writings, pays a special visit to STF from his home at Duke University. In 1973, the coup in Chile sent Dorfman into exile and killed many of his friends. This film, short-listed for the Academy Award, follows Dorfman on a journey back to Chile as he recalls that period and its consequences. Director Peter Raymont, deftly interweaves previously unseen archival footage with emotionally charged contemporary scenes. Raymont has a great facility for exploring the personal and the political as demonstrated in his earlier film Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire. Dorfman’s journey is a stirring examination of both past and present. This chance to see him in person is not to be missed.
