CHISHOLM ‘72 is an emotional ride through the dramatic 1972 Presidential campaign of the black Congresswoman from Brooklyn Shirley Chisholm.
Think about it: you won’t have anything better to do at 8 pm. The polls will still be open on the west coast and the outcome won’t be announced until much later in the night. This is the perfect alternative to watching CNN when they have nothing to report.
After the film, we’ll move from the IFC Center across the street to the Fat Black Pussycat 130 West 3rd Street to watch the results on multiple TV screens. Whichever way this election goes, you’ll want to be near friends and alcohol. We hope you’ll spend it with us.
CHISHOLM ‘72 follows the ground-breaking politician from the announcement of her candidacy to the Democratic National Convention in Miami, Florida. The story is like her - fabulous, fierce, and fundamentally “right on”. Director Shola Lynch approaches this rich material with a flare that evokes a 70s aesthetic. She combines a rich source of archival footage with compelling new interviews with Chisholm and other eyewitnesses to her historic campaign.
