Monday Memo: Cinema Eye Honors Shorts Nominees Announced


The short film HACKED CIRCUIT from filmmaker Deborah Stratman was among the short films nominated for a Cinema Eye Honors award this year.

This week the Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking released the list of nonfiction short films nominated for an award this year.  Kevin Ritchie covered the news for Realscreen, while Daniel Walber did the same at Nonfics.com, as did Jake Folsom of Indiewire.

At Indiewire, Peter Knegt updated the staff’s Oscar prediction for best doc. In a separate piece at Indiewire, Steve Greene reported on the docs topping the critics’ lists thus far in 2014. Over at Nonfics.com, Christopher Campbell contemplated which fall festival docs had a shot at winning the Oscar.

At the POV blog, staff interviewed Christopher Allen of Uniondocs about the interactive short project 89 STEPS: A CHAPTER OF LIVING LOS SURES. The blog also hosted an interview with Theo Rigby, creator of interactive doc IMMIGRANT NATION.

This week Stranger Than Fiction continues its fall season devoted to the works of Chris Hegedus and D.A. Pennebaker with a screening of JANE, along with the shorts DAYBREAK EXPRESS and BABY, on Tuesday, September 30 at 8 p.m. at the IFC Center in Manhattan. JANE is a rarely seen film following actress Jane Fonda as she prepares for a recurring role in the Broadway show “The Fun Couple.” Pennebaker will be in attendance for a Q&A following the film. Monday Memo: Inaugural Art of the Real Program Launched


The film ANNA from directors Alberto Grifi and Massimo Sarchielli is among the films screening at this year's Art of the Real program at Lincoln Center.

This week the first Art of the Real program at Lincoln Center kicked off. Writing for Artforum, Nick Pinkerton profiled the program, as did Jillian Steinhauer at Hyperallergic. The Brooklyn Rail republished a piece from Colin Beckett on Thom Andersen’s non-fiction films, and Fernando F. Croce previewed the Art of the Real at Mubi.com. Writing for Film Comment, Max Nelson did the same, as did Paul Dallas of Indiewire. Daniel Walber of Nonfics.com had a write-up on the series, and Basil Tsiokos recapped the lineup in a post at his What (Not) to Doc blog. In a piece for Slant Magazine, Ela Bittencourt reviewed a handful of the films screening at Lincoln Center. In a piece for the Wall Street Journal, Steve Dollar profiled the film ACTRESS from director Robert Greene, which closes out the film series.

The PBS documentary show POV announced that it had expanded its digital documentary initiatives with a new co-producing funding mechanism as well as a call for short web-native docs. In a post for the Knight Foundation, POV Digital Director Adnaan Wasey explained the impetus behind the push for digital content. Paula Bernstein covered the development for Indiewire, while Kevin Ritchie pulled similar duties at Realscreen.

POV this week also opened up its call for entries for the 2015 season.

Writing for Indiewire, Anthony Kaufman wrote on why the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival remained relevant in a crowded festival marketplace. In a piece for Nonfics.com, Jesse Paddock named his top five films from this year’s Full Frame. Over at the International Documentary Association (IDA) website, Angelica Das also submitted coverage of this year’s fest.

Monday Memo: Finding Vivian Maier Reaches Theaters


The well-regarded film FINDING VIVIAN MAIER reached theaters this week.

This week the film FINDING VIVIAN MAIER from directors John Maloof and Charlie Siskel hit theaters. In a piece for The Hollywood Reporter, Chris O’Falt relayed the story of how the film came to be made. Writing for Ion Cinema, Jordan M. Smith reviewed the film, as did Scott Tobias at The Dissolve. Anthony Kaufman, writing for Indiewire, questioned the ethical implications of making a film about the reclusive Maier.

The PBS television show POV announced the second portion of its lineup for its upcoming season, which includes festival darlings AFTER TILLER and THE ACT OF KILLING. Kevin Ritchie of Realscreen also reported on the lineup.

Filmmaker Magazine writer Scott Macaulay wrote a piece this week on whether filmmakers should also stream their festival premiers on VHX, taking a cue from the Steve James film LIFE ITSELF. Also at Filmmaker Magazine, Michael Murie interviewed 20 FEET FROM STARDOM director of photography Nicola Marsh.

Monday Memo: POV Announces Lineup for First Part of New Season


The film WHEN I WALK from director Jason DaSilva is slated for POV's upcoming season.

The PBS documentary show POV announced the films screening during the first part of its upcoming season, which begins Monday June 23. Alison Willmore of Indiewire also reported on POV’s lineup, which includes WHEN I WALK from director Jason DaSilva and AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY: THE EVOLUTION OF GRACE LEE BOGGS from director Grace Lee.

The South by Southwest Film Fest concluded last week, but not before handing the Grand Jury Prize for documentary feature to THE GREAT INVISIBLE from director Margaret Brown. Adam Benzine of Realscreen reported on the award, as did Craig Phillip of the Independent Lens blog.

In other SXSW news, Manori Ravindran of Realscreen interviewed EVAPORATING BORDERS director Iva Radivojevic. At the Women and Hollywood blog, Melissa Silverstein also interviewed Radivojevic, while Sarah Salovaara chatted with Radivojevic for Filmmaker Magazine. Her colleague Danielle Lurie interviewed Eline Jongsma of the interactive documentary THE EMPIRE PROJECT, which also showed at SXSW. Lurie also interviewed UKRAINE IS NOT A BROTHEL director Kitty Green. Back at Realscreen Kevin Ritchie spoke with HARMONTOWN director Neil Berkeley, and also interviewed VESSEL director Diana Whitten. Realscreen’s Manori Ravindran also profiled the SXSW film THE IMMORTALISTS from directors David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg.

This week Stranger Than Fiction is closing out its Winter Season by hosting a screening of AMANDLA! A REVOLUTION IN FOUR PART HARMONY, a film about the history of music during South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle from director Lee Hirsch. The film plays at the IFC Center in Manhattan on Tuesday, March 18 at 8 p.m. Following the screening, director Hirsch will be in attendance for a Q&A. Monday Memo: POV Announces Lineup for 26th Season

POV this week announced the lineup for its 26th season, which includes a solid lineup of festival darlings such as 5 BROKEN CAMERAS from directors Emad Burnat and Guy Davidi; HERMAN’S HOUSE from director Angad Singh Bhalla; and ONLY THE YOUNG from directors Jason Tippet and Elizabeth Mims, among several other great titles. Adam Benzine of Realscreen covered the announcement, as did Alison Willmore of Indiewire.
