If you’ve ever felt conflicted over balancing your career with parenting, this film is for you. Chopra films her own pregnancy and early days of child-raising. Made in 1974 – an early example of autobiographical doc-making – JOYCE AT 34 captures a generational shift when parenting roles were changing for both women and men. Yet the dilemmas feel utterly contemporary. Chopra’s long career ranges from collaborating with Richard Leacock on HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY (shown at STF last fall) to her breakthrough fiction film SMOOTH TALK (1985), starring Laura Dern. Chopra is now directing her first new documentary in over two decades. She’ll show a sample tonight.
